The Best Way to Teach Reading

I have been a Guide at The Beacon School for two years, going on my third year. When I was hired, I had graduated with a pre-professional degree to become a Speech Language Pathologist. In my interview, Mrs. Emily introduced me to the English curriculum I would teach, Logic of English. I immediately became curious, since so much of its teachings connected to my degree. After my first year teaching and reading Denise Edie’s book, Uncovering the Logic of English, I realized using Logic of English was the best way to teach a child to read. In May 2024, I went to the Logic of English conference. I left with a rich understanding of syllables, the spelling rules and schwa. I took all my knowledge and transformed the way I taught LOE my second year.

At The Beacon School, we believe in fostering each child’s curiosity to create lifelong learners. Once a child learns to read, they can learn anything. In my classroom, I practice this by teaching students the how and why’s of reading. Through what I have learned from Logic of English, I am able to give each child a roadmap that explains the why behind each word. They know there is a reason for short and long vowels, what consonants will say and how to syllable split! With the reading roadmap, I teach reasoning over rote memorization. When a child is curious about the reasoning behind reading, they have the desire to uncover the answer. This desire is where true, life long learning stems from.
